5 CUISINES
The following 5 Cuisines contain
a 1892 calorie average over 5 days when using the traditional Oryoki bowl
size. (Or 2516 calories in 33% larger bowls which compensate for larger
size individuals in the west.)
ELEMENTAL WEIGHT
The total weight of each element, in the traditional small
bowl sizes, over a five day period is:
CALORIE COUNT
The total weight, calories, and lysine-arginine ratio
for each of the five cuisines when served in the traditional (Eastern)
bowl size:
BIGGER BOWLS
The average Japanese man weighs 137.7 pounds, a larger
healthy American can easily weigh 185 pounds, a 33% difference that should
be represented by larger Oryoki bowl sizes in the west, larger than the
traditional Asian sizes that evolved a long time ago. The addition of 33%
to the traditional Asian Oryoki bowl size yields an average daily calorie
intake of 2532 over a 5 day period. This gives
a 1722k for the eastern bowl size, or 2290 calorie average for the larger
western bowl size when fast days, comprising 9.1% of the year, are factored
in to the two bowl sizes. This is adequate calories for many, especially
considering the nutritional quality of those calories, but not enough for
some. An increase of 5% from overfilling larger bowls brings the calorie
count to 2653. If this is still not high enough, then it is necessary to
increase certain calorie dense foods into the menu in a manner balanced
between the five elements or types of food. (Addition of nuts may require
Lysine suppliments to counteract arginine.) Zen monks in Japan typically
take two main meals a day, with sometimes with a 3rd evening meal of noodles
or mochi. Their average daily calories are around 2,070 kilocalories. This
is acheived by overeating rice, and getting second or third helpings, in
contrast to this system which stresses single servings and less grain.
The use of a larger "western" bowl size to increase
calorie count can be problematic because of the sheer bulk of each meal.
Not everyone can easily consume more than the 5.58 cups of the traditional
Oryoki bowl set. An alternative to this approach is to add another meal,
(or subtract one if less calories are needed). If this is done it is best
to rotate thru all four meals so that each is doubled once over a period
of time, rather than always doubling up on the same meal which can throw
the balance of the five elements off. To do this you would eat two brunch
meals in the first morning, and the normal lunch, dinner and supper in
the afternoon. The next day you would eat one normal brunch meal, but double
up the lunch. The next day doubling up on the dinner, and the last day
doubling up on the supper meal. In this way the average calorie count is
increased by 25%, or reduced by 25% if meals are eliminated rather than
doubled.
