The dietary goal of the following crops is 5 pounds of food per day, one from each of the five food groups. Because foods are rotated and not eaten for more than 3 out of five days, food amounts are measured in five day parts, 5 pounds from each food group.
The following crops are space ideal only in a completely controlled indoor enviroment, such as a Martian greenhouse or indoor growroom on earth. (Other, less balanced plans are here) When growing outside where cool and cold seasons exist, other choices are wiser. See Farm Layout.
Omega 3 oils: Minimum daily amount is 1.6g for males, 1.1g for females. This is found in .66tsp flax oil, or 1.3 tsp flax meal. Suggested ration of omega 3 to 6 varies, from 1:1 to 1:4, with 1:3 being the minimum ratio for those with cancer or arthritis. Early man's ratio may have been 1:1, but that is with almost no oil in the diet at all. )This minimal amount comes to a 1:4 ratio with Omega 6's when they are 6.4g.)
Biomass is needed to create compost to keep the system sustainable, and it comes mainly from grain and pseudo grains, with a little from favas and sunflowers. To achieve workable compost, legumes need to be interplanted with these at about a 1/3 seeding rate, and then cut down at flowering before producing seed/beans. Black beans or vetch can be used for this purpose so some bed space (25 sq ft of rice for example) needs to be alloted to making seed for this. 4cu ft compost for 1/2" application (2cu ft for 1/4" in biomass areas) every 122 days/sol made from 60# dry or 360# wet mixed with 50% soil. 1.5 tbsp vetch seed sown per 100' biomass crops (300 sf biomass crops needs 1.9oz vetch seed every crop, so every 122 days/sol or so: 132 sq ft of carbon growing area (grains, pseudo-grains, favas, sunflowers) needs 1/2 the normal compost application (except where undercrop of vetch or beens is grown out for seed), the other 215 need full.).
Barley is by far the most efficient, and perhaps most nutritious, of all the grains. Traditional Japanese diet mixes barley with rice from a 1:1 to 4:1 ratio. Tortillas for Mexican cuisine are sucessfully prepared with 100% barley, but here we mix with corn 1:1. For Italian cuisine 100% barley can be made into bread, pizzza crust and is mixed with wheat at a 1:1 ratio for pasta. By adding Barley to all 3 grain using cuisines we lessen the square footage of the garden considerably. Alloting 1 pound of monocots per day to the diet requires 5 pounds, 2270g, per 5 day period. Subtracting 117g for alliums, leaves 2153g to be made up from grains. If 50% is barley, this requires 1077g cooked barley or 6.85 cups cooked made from 1.96c dry grain, or 413g dry mixed with about the same amount of rice (138g), corn (138g), and wheat (138g).

COLOPHON: This
grouping of space efficient crops was made by me, Yesai, on Miryai Mt.
in 2021. It was made in an attempt to develop a balanced dietary
program based upon the realities of modern
botanical classifications and on
practicalities of growing, processing and preparing one's own nutrient
dense food in limited spacing, indoors in growrooms, or in climate controlled
greenhouses on Mars.
