History:  Padmasambhava, active in the 8th century CE, introduced Vajrayana Buddhism to Tibet, founding Samye Monastery (c. 779 CE) and hiding terma texts for later discovery. Meditations on emptiness and termafocused rituals cultivate spacious awareness and futureoriented revelation. His unique idea of concealed teachings for specific times distinguishes Nyingma’s esoteric approach.

Meditation on Divine Union: Contemplate the union of Samantabhadra and Samantabhadri, visualizing their metal-hued forms merging into the void, embodying ultimate reality. Dissolving Practice  - Visualizing oneself dissolving into space.

 Star Gazing  - Reflecting on the cosmos for perspective.

Metal Mirror Meditation: Gaze into a polished metal mirror during meditation, seeing reflections dissolve into emptiness, revealing the mind’s true nature.

History:  Yeshe Tsogyal (757–817 CE), Padmasambhava’s consort, became a key terma revealer and practitioner, mastering tantric practices in caves like Paro Taktsang. Space visualizations and star gazing reflect her path to female Buddhahood, uniting inner realization with outer action. Her unique status as a fully enlightened woman elevates the mother lineage in Nyingma.

Yab-Yum Dream Yoga: Before sleep, visualize a yab-yum deity pair (e.g., Chenrezig and consort) dissolving into a metallic void, carrying awareness into dreams. Sky Burial Meditation  - Contemplating impermanence through space. Vajra Recitation  - Using the vajra to symbolize cutting through concepts.

Metal Dagger Visualization (Phurba): Visualize a metal phurba (ritual dagger) piercing delusions, anchoring the practitioner in the empty clarity of awareness.

History: Ngakpas, emerging with Nyingma’s 8thcentury spread, are nonmonastic tantric practitioners, historically active as householders wearing white robes. Open awareness and cosmic meditations sustain their lay spiritual life, bridging monastic and worldly realms. Their unique idea of tantric practice without renunciation preserves Nyingma’s accessibility.

Visualization of Vajrasattva in Union: Visualize Vajrasattva in yab-yum with his consort, their metal-like radiance dissolving impurities into the void of non-duality.  Dzogchen View  - Practices to realize the fundamental ground of being. 

Visualization of Stainless Light: Meditate on a metal-like radiant light emanating from a yab-yum deity, dissolving all concepts into the clear void of pristine awareness.

Void Meditation (Dzogchen): Sit in silent meditation, focusing on the empty nature of mind, cutting through thoughts like a metal blade to rest in pure awareness. Breathless Void Contemplation: Practice kumbhaka (breath retention) briefly, resting in the still, empty space of mind, sharp like a metal edge.
