As one can see, very few items correlate between the two systems. Our categorization according to the scientific grouping of plants using dna has replaced the old Chinese system of categorization by color. There is a shared appreciation for classifying foods into yin and yang and according to their thermal properties of cooling or warming when eaten. But seasonal allocations, taste allocations, and healing allocations differ in many regards. The Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon, the oldest received work of Chinese medical theory, was compiled around the first century BC on the basis of shorter texts from different medical lineages. The Treatise on Cold Damage Disorders and Miscellaneous Illnesses was collated by Zhang Zhongjing sometime between 196 and 220 CE, at the end of the Han dynasty.
