The Gnostics claimed to be the true heirs
and originators of Christianity. Their Teachings, books and practices were
in stark contrast to those political groups that became the Church of Rome.
The idea of a controlling priesthood, of blood atonement, of purposeful
crucifixion, are all at odds with Syrian Gnosticism. The tales of Jesus
in the New Testament were not deemed accurate by those who knew him best.
The Bible was not seen as authoritative. The true inspiration behind the
distorted figure of the Jewish Jesus of Nazareth was a Gnostic Nazorean
called Yeshu of Nazara. His words are not found in the Bible but are within
the Gospel of Thomas and certain other manuscripts condemned by the early
church of Rome.
