Some Cayce Similarities to
the Miryai Mt. Diet
The Edgar Cayce diet as found in
his numerous readings has some affinity with the Miryai Mt. diet. He had
two versions of his diet, one which included very small portions of some
meat which he gave to meat eaters, and another plant based one that he
outlined for the few non meat eaters who crossed his path, usually Theosophists.
He spoke of the meat free diet as being a higher path but did not seem
to encourage it much among meat eating seekers. This is problematic for
ethical vegans but not insurmountable.
In both versions of his diet he
stressed local foods, 80% alkaline fruits and veges to 20% acidic beans
& grains, 10% fats. 10% protein (beans, etc). He said, before soy options
were really available, that the best substitute for meat was soy beans.
He spoke of soy milk as being better than cows milk, at least for most.
He said milk free coffee was healthy to drink, and tea. He was against
carbonated drinks, beer, beef, pork, sugary sweets, white pasta and flours,
cheese, vinegar, cane sugar, white rice, fried foods, and imported foods
from far away. Here is a basic outline of his oft repeated menu:
-
Citrus (or oatmeal and fruit) for breakfast
with coffee. He said coffee should never have dairy in it. He warned against
cane sugar , saying very small amounts of beet or brown sugar was okay
in coffee. He suggested steel cut oats cooked two hours 3 or 4 times a
week, with or without fruit in it. He mentioned that oats could be substituted
with a whole wheat based gruel, or corn cakes. The other days he
suggested grapefruit without sugar on it, or grapefruit juice plain or
with added lime juice or orange juice with added lemon. He was adamant
that citrus never be mixed with starches, the only exception being a little
whole wheat toast a bit later in the morning.
-
2 oz carrot or other vegetable juices
could be drunk any time of the day. Pineapple juice, tomato juice also.
Along with 3-6 glasses of water.
-
He stressed the importance of raw salad
with olive oil for lunch (or fruit salad). Lettuce, tomatoes, celery, peppers,
onions, radishes, cucumber, cabbage or any vegetable that could be eaten
raw. Cooked peas or beans could be added. A large bowl of fruit or vegetable
soup could be substituted occasionally.
-
dark rye and 1 oz red wine afternoon
snack (or 10 almonds/10 raisins/dates),
-
The evening meal was always steamed
vegetables for dinner, and just vegetables for non meat eaters. (He stipulated
1 underground (carrot or potato), to 1 legume, and 1 or 2 leaf like kale
or collards). He also suggested sweet potato and squash. He often emphasized
that only the skin and outer parts of irish potatoes be eaten, but this
seems to have been because of the glycemic index of white russet meat.
(Use of blue potatoes or sweet potatoes would allow for more of them to
be eaten in the evening.)
Corn or brown rice or whole
grain breads were allowed as long as they were not white rice or white
bread or pasta. Rice was allowed several times a week, a 64 old woman was
told the proper amount of wheat bread for her was 6 ounces a day, along
with 4 ounces of pineapple, citrus, tomato juice, 6 glasses of water, etc.
One assumes these amounts would be greater for younger larger males. Cayce
said avocados are good for everyone and help build up the system. He thought
raw apples should only be eaten alone, often in a three day cleanse ending
with 2 tablespoons of olive oil. He seemed to indicate that green leafy
vegetables were the best of foods for everyone.
Peace to all....
